Meet Dr. Shaughnessy

Brian F. Shaughnessy DMD, Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry

I am thrilled to be "returning to my roots" to start a pediatric dental practice near where I grew up in the Lower Mills section of Boston. I completed my pediatric dentistry specialty training at Harvard University/Children's Hospital Boston where I served as chief resident and currently maintain a staff position.

I received my dental degree from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine where I served as class president and received the distinct honor of being named " best all around student ".

I have been the recipient of many other leadership and academic awards including publication of my research entitled "Oral Health and Bone Density in Adolescents and Young Women with Anorexia Nervosa" in the Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry.

I began my career in healthcare after graduating cum laude in physical therapy from Northeastern University. I practiced as a physical therapist at numerous institutions in the Boston area including; the Massachusetts General Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation, and Shriners Hospital for Children. Working at Shriner's Hospital and having children of my own inspired me to continue my education. My career as a PT taught me the importance of prevention which continues to be my focus as a pediatric dentist.

I am a board certified member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, as well as the Massachusetts Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Massachusetts Dental Society.

My wife Jordan and I celebrated our 20th anniversary this year and we are the proud parents of three incredible daughters: Sabine (a sophmore at Barnard College), Maya (9th grade), and Lily (4th grade), as well as a chocolate lab named Quinn.

look forward to meeting you and caring for your children!

Keep on Brushin'!
Dr. Shaughnessy

Our Wonderful staff

Sara, Front Desk/Dental Assistant

Sara was born and raised in Colombia, however has been living in the Boston area for the last 10 years! She's currently an undergraduate student at Boston University and upon graduation plans to pursue Dental School with a focus on Pediatric Dentistry. Her experience working with kids the last six years as a camp leader at the YMCA as well as working within her community have made her a natural fit for our office. Sara recently had the opportunity to assist Dr. Shaughnessy and serve as a translator during a Dental Brigade in Honduras. She has been working at Greater Boston Smiles since our inception, and is another fantastic member of our team!

Maria, Registered Dental Hygenist

Maria's journey in dentistry began as a Dental Assistant at Children’s Hospital in Boston. As her experience grew so did her love for oral hygiene. In 1999 she decided to go back to school, and attended Middlesex Community College and earned a degree in dental hygiene. She remained at Children’s Hospital for 22 years.

For those fortunate to meet Maria, it becomes obvious that her passion is working with children. She's created a positive dental experience for children and their families for the past 28 years. She feels that "everyday working as a dental hygienist is an absolute joy!"

When she's not wearing scrubs, Maria enjoys spending time with her husband Ken and their two children Alexandria and Andrew. You can also find her singing, dancing and/or cooking (sometimes all three at the same time :) )!

Maryanne, Registered Dental Hygenist

Do you know your teeth have three REALLY important jobs?  We use them everyday!  That is why Maryanne LOVES teeth, especially kids’ teeth.  Growing up in Braintree, MA, she attended Archbishop Williams and Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry.  Employed by Carney Hospital in Dorchester, and Dedham Medical Associates, has given her a genuine understanding of the needs of the surrounding population.  Not all communities in Massachusetts are fluoridated – yet.  And, dental disease continues and the concerns need addressing.
Going back to school at Bristol Community College in Fall River, to become a Dental Hygienist at age 40, was her dream of a lifetime,  and she has subsequently now worked in all seven Dental Specialties.  She is extremely thankful to all the intelligent, compassionate and hard working dental professionals around her, and is so proud to be part of the staff at GREATER BOSTON SMILES.   We have the best time working here.  As a dental hygienist, she loves helping patients love their teeth. She is committed to help your child understand the importance of having HEALTHY teeth.
Although having over 25 years in the dental profession, she remembers being a young patient at the dentist. The sites, smells and feelings are very different from even a doctors’ visit.  So, she strives for all my patients to be comfortable visiting us.  Kids and teeth – what could be better?  Having four of her own, (children that is) who are awesome grown-ups now, she loves seeing the younger ones and practicing in the PREVENTION of oral disease.

Claudia, Dental Assistant

Claudia is from Guatemala and has been living in the Boston area for the past 14 years.  She graduated as a dental assistant at BCI and has future plans of becoming a dental hygienist. Claudia is trilingual and in addition to English speaks Spanish and Portuguese. Claudia loves making kids feel comfortable while at our office, and wants nothing more than for them to leave with a smile on their face. In her spare time Claudia enjoys drawing and painting. FYI-she customizes our balloons beautifully!
