Oral Conscious Sedation

For dentistry performed under oral sedation, Dr Shaughnessy may prescribe an oral sedative for your child to take prior to their appointment, so they’ll be feeling relaxed by the time they sit down in the exam room.  He typically provides your child with a "sedative cocktail" consisting of Versed/Midazolam and/or Vistaril/Hydroxiazine which your child takes after being evaluated prior to the treatmant start time. It is imperative that your child is NPO and has nothing to eat or drink for at least 6 hours prior to their appointment time to eliminate the risk of aspiration. He may also provide them with laughing gas—or nitrous oxide—during their appointment as a way to enhance the calming effects of the oral sedative. As with any time you are in our office, you are encouraged to be in the treatment rooms during the procedure we’ll ensure that you and you’re child are feeling comfortable the entire time, and will monitor your child's vital signs so we can make adjustments as necessary.
