Your First Dental Visit:
Your first dental visit promises to be a pleasant experience.
Making sound decisions about your dental care and oral health is an easy thing to do with the right preparation beforehand:
- Make a list of questions to ask our office, so you don't forget anything on the day of your appointment. This includes any concerns you have, or oral problems you've been experiencing.
- If you have dental insurance, remember to bring your insurance card with you
What to Expect:
First, dependent on how old your child is, preventative x-rays will be taken first during your visit. Please visit our "x-ray" page for more details on what type of x-ray to expect for how old your child is.
Second, your child will receive a dental cleaning from one of our certified hygienists. This includes scaling their teeth to remove any plaque, brushing their teeth to polish and clean them and floss their teeth.
Third, our pediatric dentist Dr. Shaughnessy will administer a comprehensive oral examination. He will look at your child's teeth, soft tissues, etc. to observe whether there is any decay or oral health concerns. He will chart these observations and discuss with the parents the status of their child's oral health. He also examines any x-rays taken during the visit for further information.
Lastly, Dr. Shaughnessy or one of our excellent hygienists will give your child a fluoride varnish treatment. This extra-strength fluoride is essential in the prevention against cavities. The varnish we use at Greater Boston Smiles does not require your child to restrict eating or drinking for 30 minutes however; we recommend waiting until the following day to brush their teeth so the varnish stays on the surface of the teeth and absorbs.
We hope after the conclusion of your first visit that you visit our front desk and schedule a following 6-month cleaning appointment! We love new faces and getting to know each of our patients as they continue to visit our office.
